How Hypnosis Works

Hypnosis is a scientifically verified and effective technique that can help make powerful and positive changes in our health in gaining control over negative behaviors  affecting our emotions and physical well-being. Hypnosis relaxes the conscious mind and allows communication directly with the subconscious mind, which controls our behaviors and habits. Using repetition, sensory imagery and symbolism hypnosis creates an environment where the subconscious mind is more open to the acceptance of suggestion. Hypnosis can be used independently or along with other treatments.

Hypnosis works on the concept that our mind works on two levels—the conscious and the subconscious. We use our conscious mind to think, use logic and “will power” on a daily basis. When we try to change a bad habit, its the conscious mind we are accessing.  Our subconscious mind contains our habits, emotions, long term memories and imagination. It actually embodies the bulk of our mind power. While the conscious mind is logical and analytical, the subconscious is imaginative, suggestible and not logical in its process. That is why we often maintain unproductive habits like smoking, overeating or procrastination even when we know logically that it “doesn’t make sense” to continue them.

Hypnosis can:

  • Change negative behaviors such as smoking, bed-wetting and overeating
  • Reduce or eliminate fears, stress and anxiety
  • Treat pain during childbirth and reduce labor time
  • Control pain during dental and surgical procedures
  • Relieve symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Control nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy
  • Reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches, including migraines
  • Treat and ease the symptoms of asthma
  • Hasten the healing of some skin diseases, including warts, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis
  • Improve academic achievement

Hypnosis  can create rapid and powerful change in habits, behaviors and thinking, it is not mind control or a magic pill. It will only work if the person wants it to work. Most anyone can enter the state of hypnosis however the effectiveness of the suggestions given by the hypnotist will totally depend on the persons’ willingness to accept them. Modern hypnotists can use a wide range of techniques to enhance suggestion acceptance in their clients. Many professional hypnotists now use strategies from Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) when working with their clients.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is based on the theory that the words, expressions and inflections we use to describe our symptoms reflect an inner, subconscious perception of our problems. If these words and perceptions are inaccurate, as long as we continue to use them and to think of them, the underlying problem will persist. In other words, our attitudes are, in a sense, a self-fulfilling prophecy. The therapist will helps the patient to remodel thoughts and mental associations in order to fix preconceived notions which may be keeping the patient from achieving better health. Although some hypnosis applications like quitting smoking or stress reduction can be accepted directly by a hypnotist, others should be referred by your physician. Pain management clients should always be diagnosed by their medical doctor and then referred to the hypnotist if hypnotic pain management is indicated. This allows your doctor to make sure that you will not mask symptoms.
